Cancer 2008
Cancer 2008, the 6th International Cancer Conference, took place in Dublin, 7-9 May 2008. Attendees heard from a distinguished international faculty on the conference theme “Striving for Success in Cancer Care.” On the first day of the conference, key national and international speakers demonstrated how developments in cancer therapeutics can lead to improved care for cancer patients. With this goal in mind, the All Ireland Cooperative Oncology Research Group, the Health Research Board (HRB), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have partnered to enhance all-Ireland infrastructure in cancer clinical trials, enabling broader patient access to the latest cancer therapies.
The conference was officially opened by Mary Harney, T.D., Minister of the Department of Health and Children of Ireland, who commended contributions made by the NCI and the HRB to all-Ireland cancer clinical trials initiatives. Among the conference highlights, Professor Patrick Johnston, former member of the Consortium Strategic Advisory Group, became the fourth recipient of the Cancer Strategic Development Award for his role in the development of cancer care and research on the island of Ireland. Overall, Cancer 2008 was highly successful, with significant input from the NCI and NCI-funded researchers.
