Partner Update

The All-Ireland National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Consortium maintains an active partnership with participating institutions from Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the United States (U.S.). The Consortium is pleased to welcome several new members to its governing team:

Dr. Tony Holohan
Department of Health and Children, Ireland

In December 2008, the Department of Health and Children (DoHC) in Ireland announced the appointment of Dr. Tony Holohan as Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Since joining the DoHC as Deputy Chief Medical Officer in 2001, Dr. Holohan has been significantly engaged in Consortium activities. He formally joins the Consortium Board of Directors (BOD) and will chair the BOD during 2009. Dr. Holohan replaces former CMO, Dr. James Kiely.

Mr. Enda Connolly
Health Research Board, Ireland

Mr. Enda Connolly joined the Health Research Board (HRB) as chief executive in June 2008. Mr. Connolly will serve as HRB representative to the Consortium’s Strategic Advisory Group (SAG).

Professor Bernadette Hannigan
Health and Social Care Research & Development Office, Northern Ireland

In 2008, Professor Bernadette Hannigan was appointed as director of the Health and Social Care Research & Development Office (HSC R&D) Office. Professor Hannigan joins the SAG as HSC R&D representative.

Dr. David E. Nelson
National Cancer Institute, U.S.

Dr. David E. Nelson was recently appointed as director of the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program at NCI. Dr. Nelson brings to NCI a background in international public health collaboration and applied research in a number of areas.

Additional Consortium Leadership Changes

The Consortium SAG is delighted to welcome several new members:

Professor Michael Kerin, head of the Department of Surgery at National University of Ireland, Galway and director of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.

Professor Dennis McCance, director of the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology at Queen's University Belfast (QUB).

Dr. Richard Wilson, director of the Northern Ireland Cancer Clinical Trials Unit, based at Belfast City Hospital.
