TELESYNERGY®, developed by the National Institutes of Health's Center for Information Technology, is a multimedia medical imaging workstation that combines cameras, microscopes, audio equipment, and a variety of peripheral devices to enable clinicians and scientists in multiple locations to collaborate on research activities as if they were standing side-by-side. Joint consultations, advanced training, and participation in off-site research are made possible with TELESYNERGY®.
Systems are in use at Belfast City Hospital, St. James's Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, University College Hospital Galway, and Cork University Hospital. TELESYNERGY® has also been used to link island researchers with the King Hussein Cancer Center in Amman, Jordan. TELESYNERGY® Lite systems have recently been installed in five sites in the Republic of Ireland: Letterkenney, Limerick, Sligo, Tullamore, and Waterford. There is some preliminary discussion about further expansion of the sites.

TELESYNERGY® has enabled Ireland to move forward with the development of the National Radiation Oncology Program. Training such has the delivery of Radiation Oncology European Core Curriculum lectures have all been made possible via tele-link.
The TELESYNERGY® User Group held a meeting at NIH on 30 - 31 January 2003. Participating in the meeting were representatives from St. Luke's Hospital (Dublin) and Belfast City Hospital (Belfast) and from two U.S. hospitals (Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WVA and Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, FL). The two-day meeting included informational presentations (see below), group discussions, breakout sessions, and on-site presentations by NIH/NCI staff members. The Group also had opportunities to tour selected NCI laboratories and the NIH Clinical Center.
